Senior Football Programme
Australian Rules Football is an enduring part of the history and tradition of St Patrick’s College. The College is recognised and celebrated as one of the finest football schools in Australia and has been the educational home of 96 young men who have gone on to play football at the highest level. This list includes Brownlow medallists John James and Brian Gleeson and AFL premiership players Barry Richardson, Mick McGuane and Clinton Young. The senior football programme has a spirit and tradition nurtured by great coaches such as WT O’Malley, Gerard Ryan and Howard Clark and honoured by leaders such as Nick O’Brien, David Ronan and Jake Neade from Elliott in the Northern Territory. The programme promotes personal excellence and development that will enable all players to reach their potential in the sport. Coaches are highly skilled and experienced and never deviate from their belief that football provides an ideal medium to teach young men invaluable lessons for life.
The College plays in a number of competitions including BAS, Herald Sun Shield and annual fixtures against football schools such as Assumption College, Xavier College, St Joseph’s College and St Kevin’s College. The College provides all players with an opportunity to apply for an annual football camp, the location of which changes over a three year cycle. In 2015 the College visits Melbourne for its camp, in 2013 we travel to Ireland, England and France and in 2014 we travel to the Northern Territory. Whilst all camps provide rich football experiences, more significantly they provide real life learning opportunities that complement the diverse range of educational opportunities available to students at St Patrick’s College. For many boys the camps provide some of their fondest and most powerful memories and help shape them as athletes and young men of honour and integrity.
The spirit of the College is embodied within the programme, for as Br WT O’Malley noted, ‘boys will rise to wear the famous colours of the famous school’. Whilst some boys will be drafted, some will play for North Ballarat Rebels or their State and some will enjoy playing at local level, the essence of the programme remains constant – teach the boys to play, foster teamwork, passion and joy and insist upon the highest standards of discipline and sportsmanship. If this is present the scoreboard will look after itself and personal and team honours will continue to be the hallmark of the College’s senior football programme.
