Intermediate Football Programme
The focus of the Intermediate programme is to provide each player with opportunities for football, social and personal development. The programme mirrors the key tenets of the College’s Middle School Programme that strives to assist boys with the challenging journey from boyhood to manhood. The programme is managed by experienced accredited coaches who provide participants with development and participative pathways that will enable students to represent the College in the esteemed senior football programme in their final years at the College.
Coaching is interactive, instructional and focusses upon skill development and game sense. These key elements will greatly assist students in school, community and representative football whilst further encouraging and nurturing participation, sportsmanship and a deep love of the game. The programme is aligned with elite pathway programmes conducted by the North Ballarat Rebels with the College’s players well represented in Under 15 and 16 local and regional squads.
Players in the intermediate programme are afforded opportunities to play fixtures against BAS schools and visiting teams such as St John’s College Darwin, St Joseph’s College Geelong and Yirrarra College Alice Springs.

Guest coach instructs Year 9 and 10 students
March 14, 2014
Students from Years 9 and 10 were today treated to a special coaching session presented by North Melbourne Football Club opposition analyst Jason Lappin (pictured left).
Jason, the brother of former St Kilda and Carlton player NIgel, is a former premiership coach of Wangaratta in the Ovens and Murray Football League, and has previously held the role of development coach at the Kangaroos.
The theme of today's session was defensive play and contact techniques. Today's session was the culmination of a 7-8 step programme which started before Christmas and is aimed at providing the College's younger footballers with expert coaching before they make the big transition in coming years in Under 18 and senior football.
"The programme was designed to provide some opportunities to fast track some of the more talented players at SPC in these age groups and expose them to concepts that they will receive at Rebels in the U/16's and 18's squads for example and or to provide some opportunities for boys that may have missed out on these squads," Director of Sport Chris Gleeson said.
"It began with guest appearances from Nick OBrien and Brad Crouch and we have covered such things as inside and outside positional play and running patterns, offensive and defensive transition, game sense and decision making activities and team defence as well as kicking and other skill techniques and some introduction to core stability.
"This final session looked at individual defensive strategies. Both theory sessions using video analysis and practical session have been completed.
"The catalysts for this was an observation that out of the 25 boys boys in the U/14 Ballarat representative squads last year, 21 of them attended St Pat's (Year 8 and 9 students). The strategic plan for footy recognised the need to extend the programmes and cater for boys and their families, many of whom choose to attend SPC partly because of the footy programme on offer."
